Low-cost airline Jet2.com is to start flights from Newcastle to Las Palmas, on Gran Canaria, and Arrecife, on Lanzarote.

The new flights to the Canaries will start on October 29 2007, with the route to Las Palmas operating twice a week on Monday (until mid January) and Saturday. Flights to Arrecife will operate weekly on Thursday.

The flights join Jet2.com’s existing winter flights to Tenerife, and allows passengers from the North East to take advantage of scheduled flight-only services to both islands, giving them the freedom to put together their own holiday packages with separate flight and accommodation bookings.

Kate and Gerry McCann are clinging to hope their daughter is alive and have launched a new 24-hour phoneline to find her.

The line will be manned on a confidential basis and people are encouraged to ring in with sightings or evidence.

Spokesperson for the couple, Clarence Mitchell, told Sky News: “Without any hard evidence of her death, Kate and Gerry hope against hope that she is alive.

“They want this to exist as another line for anybody who might want to contact somebody independently.

“Any credible leads, of course, will be acted upon.”

Portuguese and Spanish police have given Gerry and Kate McCann their full backing in setting up the number, which will be based in Spain.

The operators of the line will speak a range of different languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French and English.

The third annual walk in Tenerife in aid of the Breast Cancer Appeal started this year from La Laguna instead of the usual Santa Cruz.

The popular walk set off on Sunday October 20 from the town’s Plaza del Adelantado.

The decision to opt for a new venue came about when the mayor of La Laguna, Ana Oromas, was so impressed after being invited to last years event in Santa Cruz that she invited the organisers to try a change of scenery.

The events organiser, Brigitte Gypen, who is a breast cancer survivor, was delighted.

“Our message is Pink, It’s Life” she said, “and apart from the money raised, the event is designed to raise awareness and offer moral and actual support for sufferers and their families”.

Around 7000 walkers turned up and raised around

The 1st International Agatha Christie Festival will be staged in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, to mark the 80th anniversary of the author’s visit to the island in 1927.

The programme, which is on the festival’s website, features a personal appearance by Agatha Christie’s grandson, an exhibition of her personal belongings and memories. There will also be film screenings and other activities.
