Surf’s Up

Autumn brings wind, high seas, and crashing breaks. Fancy catching a wave? Then read on, as surfing experts Phil Hoad and Ben Mondy revealed the best spots to be found especially for Ryanair Magazine.
Best for: Hawaiian-style thrills. OK, so no hula girls, but there are less sharks. Winking out of the Atlantic, off the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands are as close as you’re going to get in Europe to the full-on, grand-oceanic surfing experience. The islands are volcanic, and many of the waves break unforgivingly over razor-sharp lava reefs, so pack that first-aid kit. If you’re flying to Fuerteventura, the area around Corralejo, on the island’s northern tip, is the big draw; a 20km track runs along the coast, beside breaks with names like “Suicides”. Quiksilver runs a school here (tel: +34 928 867 307, www.quiksilver-surfschool.com). If you’re heading to Tenerife, there’s the southwest of the island, near Playa de las Americas (try K16 surf school, tel: +34 922 798 480, www.k16surf.com), and Playa del Socorro in the north.
