Tenerife – A Writers Retreat

February 22nd, 2010 by Horizon News

Tower Court by Allison Forbes

Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, is known for many things, bars, sun soaked beaches and a regular getaway for the stars of Soapland. It may not immediately strike you as the perfect place to write a novel.

Allison Forbes, from Manchester, however found it the perfect place to dream up the plot for her first book, Tower Court, published by Willow Bank Publishers. Loosely based on her time as a caretaker in a Manchester Tower Block, Forbes, who still lives in Hulme, wanted to find somewhere away from it all so she could concentrate of her writing and Tenerife suited her needs, “I have visited the Island on many occasions and loved it, so it seemed the obvious place to continue my writing. Not only is it peaceful, but I can get out and about locally easily and jiggle ideas around in my head whilst enjoying a glass of wine in the local bars. Many of my ideas came about whilst sampling Sangria! Not only that, but the scenery, the people and the whole atmosphere in Tenerife really inspired me.”

Tower Court is a “Whodunnit” style novel based on the comings and goings of the residents of a block of flats and whilst all the characters are fictionalised, many of the tales in the book could have happened in real life, indeed some of them should have done so!

Forbes has written a second novel, Manx Mayhem, which is due to be published shortly and she is currently writing her third book.
